However, more and more, the community seems to want privilege and equity. These objectives are diametrically opposed. Rights, like freedom of expression, are universal and should not be denied to anyone. Privileges are special advantages granted to certain categories of people; they can be granted and withdrawn, usually by the government.

Equality means that the law treats everyone the same, regardless of their status; while equity means that the law regards some people as disadvantaged and treats them preferentially in the name of social justice. [Equality is giving everyone the same pair of shoes. Fairness is giving everyone a pair of shoes that suits them.]

Factions within the 2SLGBTQ+IA movement are becoming increasingly aggressive in demanding privileges and calling anyone who opposes them “haters.” In doing so, the movement risks losing the momentum that allowed it to grow in its early years: with the goodwill of righteous people. This risk is particularly high when privilege claims relate to children or physical abuse.

Consider some of the Pride Month parades that took place in June. Fox News reported, “The Seattle Pride Parade… drew backlash due to the inclusion of a group of naked male cyclists, whose genitals were exposed to all attendees, including families with children”. The Washington Times reported on another incident during the Seattle parade, where naked adult men cooled off in a public fountain near young children. Videos of these incidents have been confirmed to be true by fact-checking site Snopes. Nonetheless, progressive Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal and other leading Democrats attended the event, including Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell. Officials at the parade seem determined to remain silent about these events, even as they threaten the hard-won egalitarian rights of gays and lesbians in the 70s and 80s.
