The tripartite man and the social body

The greatness of the human being is to have been created in the image of God. Like him, he is Trinitarian. Indeed, everyone can see that the individual thinks, has emotions and acts. These three faculties can be put in correspondence with three parts of our physical body: the thought with the head, the feeling with the torso, the action with the members. The human being is tripartite. It is a spirit in perpetual evolution which has at its disposal today the three tools of expression which are thought, sentiment and will.

The individual does not evolve alone on earth, he is a be social. Its challenge is to experiment with the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity and to associate them fairly with the social body in order to flourish and achieve for the greater good of others and of Nature.

“The freedom of some ends where that of others begins. »

John Stuart Mill

Not an easy task, is it?

Currency : liberty – equality – fraternity inherited from the French Revolution represents an ideal to be achieved for humanity. At the time, the three concepts could not yet be assigned to the social organism. In 1917, Count Otto von Lerchenfeld asked Dr. Rudolf Steiner to work out a social peace solution. Steiner then develops perspectives for a social reorganization of public life. These are communicated to influential political figures in Germany (Kühlmann, Prince Max von Baden) and Austria (Emperor Karl). But other interests take over, in particular through the intermediary of a soldier, Ludendorff, and the project is thwarted. There " social tri-articulation is presented a second time to the court of Vienna by Count Ludwig von Poltzer-Hoditz. But this time again, his detractors emerged victorious. This leads to World War II.

In our time, a century later, it is quite possible to understand this innovation brought about by Steiner and to introduce it into the social organism through the citizens themselves.

The principle of freedom

A society only fully develops its potential thanks to individuals who are free to train, use and make their talents available.

Freedom (and truth) is a guiding principle for pedagogy, including education and information (journalism), science and research, medicine and health, art and culture, religion and faith.

She is also involved in judicial jurisprudence and individual economic innovation.

Freedom has its place in the sphere of the life of the spirit.

The principle of equality

All persons are equal before the law. Rights must be equal for all, regardless of the class of population or income to which one belongs.

Politics is limited to legislation and internal and external security. Otherwise, it stays away from intellectual and economic life.

It cannot therefore be used for their purposes.

Equality has its place in the sphere of legal life.

The principle of brotherhood

The economy has the meaning of satisfying the needs of the population. The field of production, trade and consumption must be carried out in such a way as to provide for the needs of all the inhabitants of the planet without, for example, creating artificial deficiencies to increase prices or dominate the market.

The pursuit of profit is replaced by a global, that is to say holistic and ecologically constructive supply, which takes into account the interrelationships and the finite resources of the planet.

Brotherhood has its place in the sphere of economic life.

“Allowing these three members of the social organism, legal life (equality), economic life (fraternity) and cultural life (freedom), to manage themselves independently while interacting was, according to Rudolf Steiner, the only way to allow the ideals of the Revolution to really incarnate… Social tripartition is not a political program, a fixed system, but a living understanding of the forces constituting the social organism. It opens up to various forms of society, depending on the place and the culture, because it puts power back in the hands of the citizens. Many ideas are linked to it, such as direct democracy, the integration of nature into the value creation chain (agro-ecology), unconditional basic income, free schools and universities, ethical banking, new forms property for the means of production, the forms of associative economies, etc. This social tripartition already exists in reality, but it is often stifled by old conceptions and habits. It is waiting to be able to blossom, so that freedom, equality and fraternity become concrete realities and so that a more human prosperity can see the light of day. »

We live in a time when great change is possible. We are called to become actors of our future, so let us seize the freedom to make real the impetus of the future imagined by Rudolf Steiner a hundred years earlier.
