The researchers found that post-infection protection – known as natural immunity – was strong and remained significant over time. Against the Wuhan, Alpha, and Delta variants, protection against reinfection was 85% after four weeks, 78% after 40 weeks, and 55,5% after 80 weeks.
This protection fell more rapidly against the Omicron BA.1 subvariant, falling to 36% at 40 weeks, and protection against symptomatic disease also fell below 50%.
But the researchers found that protection against severe disease was strong against all strains, including the BA.1 subvariant.
Naturally immunized subjects had 88,9% protection against BA.1 at 40 weeks, which was actually higher than against earlier strains.
