Digital DawnSeymour Hersh: 'Something else is afoot' in Ukraine

Digital Dawn - May 23, 2023

Last Saturday, the Washington Post published an expose of classified US intelligence documents showing that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, working behind the back of the Biden White House, lobbied hard earlier this year for an expanded series of missile attacks inside Russia.

These documents were part of a large collection of classified documents posted online by an Air Force soldier now in custody. A senior Biden administration official, who was asked by the Post to comment on the newly revealed information, said Zelensky never violated his pledge never to use American weapons to strike inside Russia. . For the White House, Zelensky can't be wrong.

Zelensky's desire to take the war to Russia may not be clear to the president and top White House foreign policy advisers, but it is to members of the U.S. intelligence community who have had struggling to get their intelligence and assessments heard in the Oval Office. Meanwhile, the massacre in the city of Bakhmut continues. The men in charge of the war today – in Moscow, Kiev and Washington – have shown no interest in even temporary ceasefire talks that could serve as a prelude to something permanent. There is now only talk of the possibility of an offensive in late spring or summer by one side or the other.

But something else is afoot, as some members of the U.S. intelligence community know and have reported in secret, at the instigation of government officials at various levels in Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, Estonia, in Czechoslovakia and Latvia. These countries are all allies of Ukraine and declared enemies of Vladimir Putin.

This group is led by Poland, whose leadership no longer fears the Russian military, as its performance in Ukraine has shattered the luster of its success at Stalingrad in World War II. Poland quietly urged Zelensky to find a way to end the war – even by resigning, if necessary – and allow the process of rebuilding his nation to begin. Zelensky is not moving, according to interceptions and other data known to the Central Intelligence Agency, but he is beginning to lose the private support of his neighbors.
