The roadmap officially presented by Germany and France on Tuesday, September 19, to simplify the European Union, is the culmination of work carried out by the “Group of 12”, six French experts and six experts. In terms of form, the fact that the report is only presented in English, and is not available in French or German, demonstrates that this proposal is not addressed to public opinion in the two countries concerned. This is already a bad point, when we claim to reconcile the EU and the people. It demonstrates, either a form of masochism – because communicating in a single language, that of the country which left and weakened the EU, is still interesting from a Freudian point of view – or a demonstration of linguistic and political subjugation of a group which persists in denying its plurality in order to adopt the language of its suzerain power, the United States of America. In substance, finally, the report and the Franco-German proposal are strikingly poor, because they amount to further federalizing the EU, in line with Scholz's proposals: extension of the qualified majority, to which General de Gaulle had opposed; conditionality of federal aid, which amounts to treating Hungary and Poland as pariahs; reduction in the number of commissioners, which de facto eliminates the principle of one commissioner per state; harmonization of national electoral laws, which amounts to subjecting nations to European functioning, as if they were subdivisions of it; mixed chamber of courts and supreme tribunals of the EU, which amounts to initiating the merger of the orders of jurisdiction; increase in the federal budget; establishment of a common debt, that is to say the end of all financial sovereignty.

Instead of simplifying – which was the stated objective – we are seeing a new layer of complexity appear with “quintets” of Council presidencies, citizen participatory processes integrated into procedures composed of… people from outside the EU, new institutions (such as a transparency and probity office).

It is about dissipating the last scraps of national sovereignty. You have to be blind not to understand that each time we have coupled more federalism with more enlargement, public opinion has risen violently. Last time it cost us Britain.

We must stop this madness as quickly as possible. This starts by not renewing Madame von der Leyen, whose mandate which is ending has been catastrophic for France and the EU. This also means inflicting on the Renaissance list, which supports these proposals, the greatest disavowal in the next European elections.
