Otherwise, we attract big problems: Freedom and Human Rights, that's all very well, but don't push it.
It is thus that to apostrophize the Head of State by reproaching him more or less sharply for his policy and the way in which his government manages current affairs, it is not very well seen and it can even lead you to court. Nothing screams “Democracy!” louder. than imprison those who don't show you respect, right.
Yes: while freedom of expression was once a pillar of democracies, it appears that France – which has never really made the effort to be a particularly applied one – is now at the forefront of making it clear to all its citizens that the question will arise in very different terms as the months go by.
This is how we learn from less and less unofficial sources that on the pretext of fighting against online hatred, the government is considering more and more seriously coercive measures to eliminate certain Internet users from social networks.
Of course, and as usual, to pass what increasingly appears to be a serious constitutional attack on the fundamental right of expression, it will be a question of coating the measure in a good layer of security: in order to keep the networks own social networks on them, we will ban stalkers and other cybercriminals. It will suffice to rely on the new broadside of directives and regulations currently being applied in the European area packaged in the name of “Digital Service Act”, a vast security catch-all where everything can be a pretext to restrict and limit the comings and goings of European Internet users.
“Traumatized” who suffer from physical but also psychological injuries.
On the surface, it's just an ordinary Excel spreadsheet. 150 squares, white background, black font. Between the lines of this “census” – not exhaustive, specify its authors – of the injuries noted by caregivers on the demonstrators of Sainte-Soline, published on March 31 by Les Uprisings of the Earth, an appalling picture emerges, filled with pain. vivid with lasting consequences. Two life-threatening emergencies, two "dilapidated" noses, an eye bruised by pieces of glass, a wound to the testicles, dozens of grenade shards, a shovelful of "deep" wounds, sometimes necrotic, which could reach the "size of an egg”… As well as anxiety, panic, feelings of “dissociation”. So many troubles which continue, two weeks after the events, to affect a large number of activists.
On the physical level, first. Many people bear the stigma of police repression. The vital prognosis of Serge, a demonstrator hit in the head by a grenade, is still engaged today. Victim of an LBD shot in the throat, Mickaël, in his thirties, had to be plunged into a coma for more than a week, and undergo major brain surgery. He has since woken up.
To these two highly publicized cases are added dozens of others. General practitioner who came to demonstrate in Sainte-Soline, Perle recounts having had the impression of being “in a war zone”. After taking care of Mickaël, the young woman found herself on a path where there were many injured people. “Everyone was screaming. There were several people with blood on their faces, people on the ground, under survival blankets, crying, half conscious...” The organs of some were, according to his observations, permanently damaged. “When you opened the eye of one of them, you just saw a red [eye]ball. In this type of case, the functional prognosis is engaged. »
In the space of a week, like many, I spent hours of worry crawling in front of a courthouse hoping to be released from police custody, fear in the face of the violence of the forces of the order, the chilling testimonies of Sainte-Soline, the lies of the government, the attempts at diversion by threats of dissolution and the ripples of a Plan of water tossing on the surface, ignoring the depths, floating without any grace.
When all avenues of recourse have been exhausted, when scientists are not listened to, when our young people are arrested, when comrades are mutilated, when the law is no longer respected by representatives of the State, when we order emergency services to sort out the injured, it would be criminal to sit idly by. But we are exhausted. I see my friends, my relatives, all stunned, exhausted, morose, worried, even the most seasoned. It seems to me that a milestone has yet been crossed. I myself remain flabbergasted in front of the images of mutilated people, no longer knowing how to counter bad faith, manipulation and shameless lies, having the feeling of having repeated the same things a thousand times, drained of all energy.
But there are so many others, which go beyond press headlines. Anger of nurses, teachers, postal workers, railway workers, residents of working-class neighborhoods, feminists, parents of students… to name but a few. There is anger installed, passed under the radars of the major media but still present, such as that aroused by the health pass and the suspension of unvaccinated personnel. The deep anger, against social injustices and our parody of democracy. And finally the manipulated anger, directed against scapegoats – “immigrants”, Muslims, unemployed, civil servants… These angers play on fears. “Fear leads to anger, anger to hate…” He was not just talking bullshit, Yoda.
But his point is nevertheless restrictive. The Olympian calm of the Jedi, whose emotions must never allow themselves to be invaded, refers to the Greek philosophers who advocated self-control: for them, anger was a sign of powerlessness. If the Romans valued indignation, it was an aristocratic value – "a virtue consisting in being ashamed of the faults committed by oneself or by others towards the demands of one's rank", explains the philosopher Pierre Zaoui ( 1). In Christianity, anger is one of the seven deadly sins. These are essentially individualistic visions.
What about collective anger? Do they necessarily lead us to the "dark side", as feared by Yoda and all those who, in the current popular anger, are already seeing a good score from the far right in the presidential election of 2027? One thing is certain: on the evening of March 20, when the motion of no confidence presented to dissolve the government failed by nine votes, it was good to be in the street, with other angry people, rather than alone at home.
“Fear is the path to the dark side: fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to pain. »
But he also wants to strengthen these measures in the context of the so-called climate emergency. Lately, the concept of 15-minute cities has been making headlines.
In dystopian science fiction novels, towns or regions are sometimes divided into areas that residents cannot leave or only under certain conditions. Unauthorized crossing of the limits of these zones is generally sanctioned by drastic penalties. It is often a question, in these fictions, of keeping the workers or the poorest inhabitants away from the territory of the rich and the privileged.
Oxford, the capital of the county of Oxfordshire in England, has been overtaken by these fantasies of the future. Here, we want to divide the city into six 15-minute zones using “traffic filters” and reduce the movement of residents between these zones in a targeted manner. The idea for this traffic strategy apparently stems from the “city in 15 minutes” concept, presented in March 2022 by the World Economic Forum due to the so-called climate emergency. This concept is based on the ideas of mathematics professor Carlos Moreno, according to which all important facilities should be accessible in no more than 15 minutes, without a car. Instead of the car, it is now the bicycle that must be put forward.
At first glance, this seems like a good thing, since all the necessary infrastructure for life is nearby and there is no need to travel long distances. But such concepts become worrying when the mobility of the inhabitants is reduced. And that is precisely what the Oxford authorities are planning: from 2024, special cameras, called "Traffic Filter", will monitor the borders between areas, supposedly to reduce traffic. If a vehicle passes through the filter, the camera reads the license plate and, if it does not have an exception or residence permit, a ticket is sent to the offender. Buses and taxis can pass freely, and on foot or by bicycle, crossing the border is still allowed without fines.
Léna Lazare, 24, is one of the spokespersons for Youth for Climate. It is involved in the dynamics of the "Earth Uprisings" which are mobilizing in particular against mega-basins.
Reporterre — Faced with the government, the social movement and the environmental movement seem to be in a similar situation: they are not listened to. What do you think ?
Léna Lazare — Yes, it's interesting to draw a parallel between the fight against pension reform and that for the climate. The same methods are used by the government to silence protest or contain it as much as possible. He ignores her and tries to delegitimize her. As soon as the movement hardens, the authorities take out the truncheons.
They call us “rebellious” or “eco-terrorists”, try to discredit us and criminalize us. A few days apart, we experienced an identical repression. Demonstrations in Paris against the pension reform at Place de la Concorde have been banned. Our anti-basin mobilization too. Red zones with traffic ban orders, in addition to protest ban orders, have been decreed. There are fines and arbitrary arrests. The government wants to scare us.
Despite the numerous accidents, the deaths, the hands and feet torn off, the eyes gouged out... despite the condemnation of the Council of State concerning the illegal use of the "trap" by the Parisian police forces, nothing has changed. because Gérald Darmanin despises the rule of law. They are arming themselves against the population as if they were going to war against a foreign enemy with vehicles over-equipped with weapons of war (the violence of the forces of order can be observed on the video below.) Since when are the police tasked with tearing down a protest banner? You can see it in the images, several police officers with rogue behavior, unworthy! Such excesses can only take place if the hierarchy allows it, that is obvious. The use of the trap is nothing but a premeditated artificial way to raise the tension because there is no possibility of extracting oneself from the demonstration!
One thing is certain, the government is equipping itself in a military way because it knows very well that the population will end up exploding given the numerous betrayals and the catastrophic management of the affairs of the State. They know perfectly well that their days are numbered, so they can only rely on police violence.
