A parade spokesperson said the cameras were only used to "direct people to less crowded areas if the areas become too crowded".
"The technology helps manage crowd safety by measuring capacity, allowing operations to focus on an area that requires an immediate response or to plan ahead for areas where crowds are increasing," added the Mardi Gras spokesperson.
"There's no facial recognition tracking and it can't follow people from place to place. It provides real-time metrics that give a snapshot of the crowd across the entire course at any time to inform proactive crowd management decisions. »
