Taiwan: Compensations paid to victims of COVID vaccine injuries exceed those paid for all vaccines combined in the last 30 years – only 45% of compensation claims have been processed so far
With only 45% of applications processed to date, more than 153 million Taiwan dollars (4,5 million euros) have already been paid to people injured by anti-COVID vaccines, more than the 129,6 million dollars (3,8 million euros) paid to victims of injuries caused by all vaccines combined over the past 30 years, it was learned yesterday when the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) responded to criticisms formulated by the legislative group of the opposition party.
At a press conference yesterday, September 6, the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party urged the government to speed up the process of considering compensation for damages caused by the COVID-19 vaccine.
Tseng Ming-tsung, head of the KMT parliamentary group, said three major problems hampered the resolution of cases: the complexity of procedures, the long processing times and the difficulty in determining causality.
Tseng Ming-tsung mentioned that the first problem is the complexity of the procedures, which requires victims to continually provide additional information. The second problem is the long processing time, with a maximum of 9 months for review, but cases often take much longer, even up to 2 or 3 years. The third problem is the difficulty of determining causality. Of the 3 cases processed to date, only 271 cases, or 123%, were judged to have a causal link to the vaccine, while the remainder were judged to have no causal link and could therefore not be compensated.
KMT General Secretary Hsieh Yimin said that according to Food and Drug Administration statistics, between March 2021 and July this year, a total of 21 adverse reactions were reported following COVID vaccination -208. However, CIVP statistics show a total of 19 cases over the past three years. As of July, 9 claims had been filed under the Vaccine Victim Compensation Program, meaning not all vaccine victims have applied for compensation.
